The Home For Life Movement focuses on finding ways to assist seniors and those with physical disabilities to remain in the home of their choosing, barring catastrophic illness or injury, For Life. Obviously current and future technology and services can play a key role in making that possible.
A major component of Home For Life is the testing by peer groups of products and services. In other words all of these new products and services are "put to the test" by real people in real homes, then evaluated to make sure they do what the manufacturer or provider says they will, and that they work well for seniors. This feedback will help seniors decide if a product or service is for them,. The process also allows vendors and manufacturers to receive feedback from the community that they then use to improve their products and services.
Home For Life is much more than Universal Design, although Universal Design plays a major role in being able to stay in a home for life and is a foundation portion of the movement. Home for life addresses the other parts of lifestyle and general living including assistive technologies and general convenience items along with health care, safety and security and communications. All of these areas are important to allowing people to live comfortably, safely and independently.
A Demonstration Center is currently under construction in Lee's Summit, Missouri, USA ( a suburb of Kansas City), that will be the foundation of this testing and evaluation process. All results will be available on-line as well as on on-site. The demonstration center sets on the campus of the largest single facility continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in the United States.
We are establishing relationships with major vendors of assistive technologies and many independent living organizations, plus major universities to provide as much current and relevant information as possible to public. Affiliations are also being established with vendors and distributors to provide the best prices on products to assist with independent living through a single source.
